Rings for
Other Weaves
The following is a list of some ring sizes
that can be used for other weaves. This is by no means a comprehensive
list. Better lists can be found under instructions
in the catalog or by asking at the Forum.
To a certain extent a ring type, the ratio of ga and inner diameter,
that you want to use for a weave will depend on the project and
may require a bit of experimenting.
Oriental weaves usually have a larger ring
and a connector ring. They can be made with the same size rings
and experimented with, but these lists are examples of what will
work.

Mail for Combat
Use
- (For Costume pieces use one ring size
larger (ID) than recommended for combat use)
General: Maille is not a very popular body armor choice
for medieval recreationists but is very useful for camails (neck
protection that hangs from your helmet. The main reason
for this is recreated fighting uses blunt weapons and mail is
really only good at stopping an edge. Mail armor worn for
combat should have rigid padding underneath or should be very
stiff. Much of the protection of mail armor comes from
its weight, a piece of light titanium mail would be strong enough
but may not provide adequate protection. Good examples
are camails and mail skirts. A camail hangs in front of your
neck and kinetic energy from a sword thrust is transferred to
the mail instead of your neck.
One way to get protection and flexibility
is to use 6 in 1 where protection is needed and 4 in 1 where flexibility
is ideal. Several
link types work good for both 4 in 1 and 6 in1 maille. A
piece of 4 in 1 maille attaches perfectly to a piece of 6 in1
maille of the same link type.
Examples of rings that make both 6 in
1 and 4 in 1 are 14 ga 1/2", 16 ga 5/16" and 18 ga 1/4".
